Internal Medicine Service

Dr. Daniela Bedenice, Dr. Melissa Mazan, Dr. Nick Frank, and Dr. Alisha M Gruntman lead the Internal Medicine Service, a division of the Hospital for Large Animals at Cummings Veterinary Medical Center, and are all board certified by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. In addition, Dr. Bedenice is the only board-certified specialist in Large Animal Emergency and Critical Care in New England. Supporting the faculty clinicians are trained technicians, interns, residents, students and staff within a state-of-the-art facility for providing diagnosis and advanced patient care.

The Internal Medicine Service works hand-in-hand with board certified, on-site radiologists, pathologists, ophthalmologists, cardiologists, and dermatologists to offer the best possible care under one roof in diagnostics, therapeutics, and intensive care management for large animals. Equine patients—approximately 90 percent of the caseload—range from performance animals to beloved pets, from newborn foals to geriatric horses. Most of the non-equine patients seen at the Hospital for Large Animals—camelids (alpacas and llamas), small ruminants (such as sheep and goats), and pigs—tend to be companion rather than production animals.

Typical issues of the internal organ systems treated by the Internal Medicine Service include:

  • Respiratory (pneumonia)
  • Neurological
  • Gastrointestinal (colic, diarrhea)
  • Renal (kidney)
  • Infectious diseases
  • Other conditions that need medical attention

The Hospital for Large Animals provides intensive care for around-the-clock observation and treatment of critical patients. The neonatal unit is equipped to provide respiratory and intravenous support to the critically ill neonate. The isolation facility is equipped to treat patients with infectious diseases such as strangles, equine Herpes 1 (EHV1) and Salmonella.
